Wright Flight Inc

Wright Flight: Beginning in the 2022-23 school year 6th through 8th graders will have the opportunity to learn about the history of aviation, about aviation safety, how small plane controls work, course plotting, make a substance free pledge, and set and achieve an academic or behavioral goal. If they meet the program requiremnts they will be able to participate in a "fly day" where they will get to actually pilot a plane with an instructor pilot. 4th and 5th grade students participate in a similar program that culminates in an aviation related experience.

 

Cubes in Space: 7th grade had the opportunity to develop a tiny experiment and apply to fly their experiment on a NASA sounding rocket or research balloon flight through the Cubes in Space program during the 2021-22 school year. The class applied with a project involving agriculture in space and were approved for spaceflight! Their project is flying on a near-space NASA balloon mission with other Cubes in Space projects from around the world and they will be conducting research with the seeds upon their return.

TED Ed: We were first accepted for TED Ed as of their cycle beginning April 1, 2022. Students have the opportunity to make their own TED talks on topics of high interest that they research in depth.

Arizona Council on Economic Education: Students in 6th and 8th grade compete in a variety of Economics competitions including Economic Concept Poster Contest, Rockinomics (ecnomic concept music video contest), The Stock Market Game, and the Mayor's Challenge case study. I also facilitate Financial Fitness in Action which is a program that all of Acorn's 7th and 8th graders get to participate in once during the school year.

Arizona Law Day: Students in middle school have the opportunity to participate in Law Day activities including a virtual conference with keynote speakers who are experienced judges and lawyers and a law day, law writing competition. Acorn has 2 middle school reprenstatives for Kids Voting Arizona (KVAZ) who attend monthly meetings and work to facilitate voting for the school. They post weekly poll questions that all Acorn students can vote on, online, and help to run an actual election on election day in November.

Trout in the Classroom (TIC): Students in all TAG classes at the Main campus have the opportunity to observe trout hatch from eggs and grow. Some will learn about them more in depth including the stages of development and care methods. (Arizona Wildlife Holding Permit #SP909265)

 

Math Olympiad: Students nominated by their math or regular classroom teacher have the opportunity to compete in math problem solving competitions once a month in November through March. Their scores can earn them both school and MOEMS recognition as an individual and as a team.
